Fading Suns 4 - Streamlined Rules Booklet

The original Fading suns 4th ed rules are easy and work well. I’ve played and ran games online and in person. Anyone who knows basic arithmetic can run the game and doesn’t need “streamlined rules” which is code word for FS community forced this upon the game creator and still didn’t buy it. It gives the wrong impression to people new to the game that there is something wrong with the original rules which can make people pass on this game. I didn’t buy 4th ed originally b/c of the lie that the game was too complicated. It is not. Go with the original rules.

A excellent and terrifying world to add horror elements to fading suns. This could be a excellent world for characters to be "the changed" from the faction book, somehting like a crash landing or artifact hunters going on to an dangerous planet for rare tech. outlines everything perfectly and is a lot of fun to run

Secret of the Fading Suns

A terrible version of the rules that gives Gm's more work as they have to rework the other game materals to fit these rules. it sets off the solve problems that weren't there and creates new ones. not worth it even for free. it also give the wrong impression to anyone new to this game. the orginal rules are much better. if you can do basic arithmetic, you don't need these streamlined rules.

an Excellent resource. within this one book, it opens up an insane amount of options (on top of the many combinations possibe in the core book). aliens, cyborgs (has more cyber devices), mutants, lost noble houses and religious sects. and if that doesn't sell it, how about a monkey shooting a gun while smoking a cigar--yeah nowm you get it.

This perfecly outlines grail but is of such high quality, it doesn't look like a fan made product. It oulines the planet, languages, the people on grail perfectly. the only problem with this book is that there isn't a pod version.

Fading Suns 4 - Character Book

The most innovatived game I've played in years! If your truly looking for something different then this is the game for you. The original, publish in the 90s, had a great setting but had lackluster rules and convoluted character creation. This version fixes all of those problems. Like all Games, this has it’s issues which I will detail below but overall, this is a great game.

Pros:

initiative One of the best initiative systems ever. It is very weird but works to make the game fast pace. Basically, if there's no special circumstance like surprise or special ability then the players decide the initiative order for themselves and their enemies. IF they always make their enemies go last, they give the GM a special advantage. Players have to think about who goes first and why? Maybe, we let the GM go first to pool resources or take the risk and all attack at once. This turns initiative into something more than just a die roll.

Easy Rules and the tokens (victory points are fun): If players roll well they get victory points (tokens), they can use them to increase damage/skill results, increase def, bypass enemy defenses etc. This means players are not just rolling then staring out into space. they're always managing their pool and planning their next action.

The setting: (This is detailed in the separate lore book but the character classes/abilities tie in well with the lore) This is the best science fiction fantasy setting ever. You want knights on horseback with laser swords, you want to be a smuggler outrunning pirates in your spaceship, you want to be a psychic, space commando, clerical healer, a techie inventor—you got it. The setting has many ways to play in this universe and it all makes sense in the lore. There is a reason why melee weapons are still used even though laser pistols exist, why nobles are still in power, how a medieval world can exists with it’s own space port. Its amazing.

Con: States (conditions like frustrated, paralyzed etc) can slow the game down. Social combat, which would normally be fast, is slowed down by flipping to the back of the book to read each description. The book makes it clear that this can be altered and are just guidelines for role playing. I just used the same penalties for all states in each category i.e. all mental states give the same penalty, all physical are the same penalties except for obvious ones like paralyze.

Why are people so iffy on this? As much as gamers claim they want innovation, most simply want an off-brand version of one of the other major rpgs. On paper, the system seems like it wouldn’t work but at the table, it works very well. If you overthink this game, it easy to imagine it not working. But from personal experience, it not only works well but has reinvigorated my interest in the hobby.

A great game for zombie one shots or longer games. It uses the excellent pacesetter system. The action table is easy to use and chapter zombie creation is fun.

A great addition to the pacesetter system. Most modern gamers will complain about the "clunky rules" but if you give it a chance runs smoother than most games of a similar concept such as mage the ascension or awakening. it's a solid game.

Changeling: The Lost
Publisher: White Wolf

Most people won't admit this but OWOD wasa mess to run. Changeling (1st ed) was no different. This versions fits Changelings into WOD better than the previous iterations. It simplified what the fay are and their abilities. It outlines the world of that changelings better (the hedge). The onyx path version (like all chronicle of darkness games from them) just add an unnecessary layer of complicated rules. This is the best version of the game and adds a fun modern dark fantasy vibe to the World of Darkness.
