100 Encounters for the Deserts of the Nile Empire

ADD TO WISHLIST >

This supplement has 100 encounters Storm Knights could have in the desert regions of the Nile Empire, in particular those of Egypt, or those areas where the Egypt that Never Was could have been. Some are odd and some are dangerous. hey can be used to enliven a desert journey, background colour or as potential adventure hooks.

This PDF supports Adobe layers and the page backgrounds and images can be disabled to make printing easier.

Here are some sample results:

  • Partially buried in the sand is an alabaster scroll case which, if it is opened, proves to contain a papyrus scroll. The papyrus is ancient and covered with hieroglyphs. If they can be read, with a DN 18 language test, they appear to give the directions to a long-lost tomb belonging to a pharaoh.
  • Patches of blood have seeped into the sand of a dune and if they are followed back to their source, a badly wounded man can be found sprawled on the other side of the dune. According to the man, who is in desperate need of healing and will die if not treated - magic or a first aid test will work - his group was attacked by bandits. The man was only spared as a lure for a trap, and if the characters stop to heal him, they will be attacked by bandits; treat as ten Soldiers and one Officer from the Core Rulebook, though equipped with bulletproof vests and armed with KK81 Rifles for the Soldiers and KK08 Pistol for the Officer.
  • Pools of black liquid on the ground can easily be identified as being oil that has apparently bubbled to the surface. Less obvious is the fact that flammable gas has also bubbled to the surface with the oil, and any naked flame in the area will ignite the gas, causing a burst of flame and igniting the pools as well, which will cause several fiery plumes and a rapid increase in temperature. Characters next to the pools must make a DN 14 dodge test to flee, else suffer 10+1BD damage from the flames.
  • Protruding from the sands is the head of a large stone sphinx. The rest of the sphinx is buried beneath the ground. Although the sphinx just looks like it's an impressive statue, probably from the Egypt that Never Was, it is in fact a real sphinx (see the Nile Empire Sourcebook) that was turned to stone by magic. Whether or not the sphinx proves to be friendly if turned to flesh again depends a lot on whether those doing so can convince it that they didn't turn it to stone in the first place.
  • Protruding slightly from the sand is a stone tablet covered in hieroglyphs. A DN 14 scholar test will be able to translate this as being from a pharaoh who was sending a treasure to a temple; another DN 14 scholar test will reveal that the pharaoh is one unknown, suggesting it is from the Egypt that Never Was. The treasure is not fully detailed in the tablet, and it seems the tablet was accompanying it. It cannot be told if the treasure is also somewhere in the area.

One page is the front cover, one the front matter and most of one is ads.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
