Old-School Essentials: The Necromancer

Auf die Wunschliste >

Wizards who deal with the macabre mysteries of death and undeath are a staple of sword and sorcery fiction and fantasy gaming. While the Old-School Essentials magic-user class has access to some spells within the necromantic domain (for example, horrid classics such as animate dead and death spell), such magic is not the class’ primary focus. Enter the necromancer...

A supplement for Old-School Essentials with the necromancer class and the complete list of 72 spells, including such creepy delights as corpse visage, carrion stench, vampiric touch, wall of bones, veil of life, and necrotic gaze.

Play Test Content

This book is presented as in-development content for play testing. The material will be published in its final form in a future Old-School Essentials book.

Compatibility

The content in this book is 100% compatible with the classic Basic/Expert rules (B/X) and can thus be used with any B/X-based game.

Love the class overall. I think adding a list of Level Titles for the Necromancer would round it out nicely.

Would it be possible to get a Spell Tracker for the Necromancer? And maybe a combined Necro/M-U Spell Tracker? A combined list would be more than would page and would be less elegant though.

That's something we'll do once the class is published in its finalised form. (This PDF being just a playtest version.)

Tested this at my table with three players for a game. IMHO these spells are really missing some flavor from my table tests. I changed "choke" to be "Spray of Maggots" with exactly the same effect. I think more imagination needs to go into some of the spell names, descriptions and effects. I do like the "summon" types of spells, those are done much better than most versions of the necromancer - but the existing control spells are missing that "dark description" or "rule of cool" factor for a necromancer. I think that Choke, Paralyzing Touch, Silence, Spectral Hand, Crypt Sight, Fear and Hold Person at least should be re-worked into interesting spells with a necromancer flavor, because they feel bland and not interesting.

Love how this adds a variant magic-user with its own spell list without having a lot of overlap with the magic-user or illusionist.

If there are eventually similar options for a Summoner (B/X as is seems to avoid summoning spells for the most part) and a Transmuter, then I think the most likely types of adventuring specialist will be covered. I think the standard magic-user already covers to role of Evoker pretty well, and in my experience I’ve not seen much interest in specializing in the schools of divination, abjuration or enchantment by players. Perhaps there could be collected in an OSE equivalent of Unearthed Arcana.

In the pdf it says that groups not wanting to add another class but still wanting to use necromancer spells can add those spells to the Magic-User spell list. Since the elf demi-human class also uses the necromancer spell list, could they theoretically also use necromancer spells?

As elves use the magic-user spell list, the default would be that any spells added to that list are also usable by elves. You could of course deem that elves only use the pure magic-user spell list, without any additions. It's really a case of what works best in your campaign.

Is V2 the update with V1 being the previous version, or are there other differences between them?

Great question! Drow: 8th level. Elf: 8th level. Half-elf: 9th level. Human: Unlimited.

We'll update the PDF with this info.

Eingescanntes Buchformat
